Prisencolinensinainciusol

I’m entertaining a guest this weekend, so I don’t have a lot of time for an extended entry I’m afraid.  I’ll make it up to y’all, somehow.

Rebecca was watching the music channels when a popular new song called “Yeah Yeah” by Willy Moon, one of those neo-soul/funk singers the kids like so much, came on.  Apparently it’s in the new iPod advert or something.  Somewhat decent song, not very memorable, but very slick.  The video looked great too, but as I watched a light bulb went off in my head.  Haven’t I seen this video somewhere before?

It seems to take significant inspiration from the choreographed dance sequence of “Prisencolinensinainciusol” by the Italian singer Adriano Celentano.  The mirrors, the singer on the podium, the look is almost identical.  I think a number of people will pick up on this quite soon, since Prisencolinensinainciusol is a somewhat popular song on the internet due to its irresistibly unique sound and completely indecipherable lyrics.  Two large groups of people, both completely unaware that they are linked through this video, about to find out the other exists and argue about the line between rip-off and homage.

Like so many others, I absolutely adore Prisencolinensinainciusol, but before it appeared online it was a completely forgotten irrelevant TV performance from decades past.  You can’t really get too worked up about someone really digging its look and transplanting it into a modern music video.  Hell, it worked for Beyonce.

Judge for yourself.  And even if the similarities don’t interest you, it’s a good excuse to listen to Prisencolinensinainciusol.

haha…good eye. I googled this video after seeing it on teevee…because I knew someone online had to have picked up on the similarity to Prisencolinensinainciusol.

I did the exact same thing. 10 seconds of watching “yeah yeah” and I knew it had to be a homage to adriano celentano’s video. I was trying to find proof that they did it on purpose. I’ve got the Prisen… music video on my music box.
